The Jubilee Center* takes its name from the Biblical Year of Jubilee in Leviticus - the great year of social justice. It began with the blowing of the ram's horn trumpet (the jubal) and the cry, “proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all its people!” Since 1984, the St. John’s Soup Kitchen and Office of Social Services have served the community as ministries of St. John’s Episcopal Church. In late 1995, members of St. John’s along with members of four other congregations - St. James in The Hills, St. Andrew’s, and St. Ann’s - formed The Jubilee Center of South Broward, Inc., in order to expand service to the poor and homeless of southern Broward County. The Center, a non-profit corporation under the laws of the State of Florida, is run by a Board of Directors composed of members of the four congregations as well as representatives of the client community. The Jubilee Center was recently honored as the 2005 "Agency of the Year" by Volunteer Broward.
